Visit our Youtube pageDr. Shivam Joshi, Clinical Professor and Nephrologist at NYU Langone, discusses the principles of plant-based diets, dietary protein, and how your kidneys may respond to this type of nutrition. He shares research and significant data on plant-based diets and how taking control of your diet may slow the progression of kidney disease.
Chef Duane Sunwold, a professional chef and culinary arts instructor in Spokane and North Idaho, joins Dr. Joshi to share his journey with FSGS and how he took control of his disease through a plant-based diet. He also shares tips and tricks on how to start following a plant-based diet, and resources for cookbooks, recipes, and some of his favorite websites that he uses both personally and professionally.

Visit our Youtube pageFor more than 20 years, eGFR was calculated differently for Black and non-Black people. Using these two different calculations has led to disparities in the way patients are able to access care and treatments for kidney disease.
In 2020, a task force was established to reassess the use of race in calculating eGFR. Dr. Crystal Gadegbeku, Chair of Nephrology at Cleveland Clinic, was part of this task force, and led a discussion on the history, the process, and the significance of removing race-based calculations in nephrology — she also explains how removing the racial bias from eGFR calculations can improve health outcomes for all kidney disease patients.
Visit our Youtube pagePredicting kidney disease progression isn’t easy, but research has shown nephrologists key indicators to look for and track.
Dr. Marva Moxey-Mims, Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of Nephrology at Children’s National Health System, focuses on understanding predictors of rare kidney disease progression, including common biomarkers and their significance in not only disease monitoring, but how they are being used to get a more precise diagnosis.
She also covers genetic testing in pediatric nephrology and provide guidance on if or when you should consider genetic testing for your child.
