Understanding C3G

Complement 3 Glomerulopathy (C3G) is a rare, chronic kidney disease that damages the glomeruli—the tiny filtering units in the kidneys that help remove toxins from the blood. Complement 3, or C3, is a protein that plays an important role in the body’s alternative complement system, which helps regulate the immune response. In people with C3G, the alternative complement system becomes overactive. This can cause inflammation and damage to the glomeruli, leading to blood in the urine (hematuria), protein in the urine (proteinuria), and chronic kidney damage over time. Approximately half of people with C3G progress to kidney failure within 10 to 15 years.

C3G at a Glance

C3G affects approximately 1 to 2 people out of every 1 million people in the United States. It can affect people of all ages but is often diagnosed during in people in their 20s and 30s. For approximately 10% to 25% of people with C3G, genetic changes in specific proteins are associated with the disease. Researchers continue to study what causes C3G in others.

Two Types of C3G
Dense Deposit Disease (DDD)
C3 Glomerulonephritis (C3GN)
