Countdown to a Cure is NephCure’s premier fundraising gala and the largest event of the year dedicated to advancing progress for people living with rare, protein-spilling kidney diseases. 

Each fall, more than 400 dedicated supporters, including patients, families, clinicians, corporate partners, and advocates, gather for an unforgettable evening of inspiration and impact. Our goal is to raise $1 million to accelerate research, expand patient support programs, and ensure that life-changing treatments reach those who need them most.

At NephCure’s 21st Annual Countdown to a Cure Gala, we’re proud to recognize two individuals whose leadership, advocacy, and dedication are transforming the future for people living with rare protein spilling kidney diseases. 

Alvin Levine Award

Andrew Silverman, CDFA, QPFC

Senior Vice President, Wealth Advisor

Andrew Silverman has spent over two decades as a Family Wealth Advisor, guiding individuals, families, business owners, athletes, and entertainers through the complexities of managing, growing, and preserving wealth. With a thoughtful, personalized approach, Andrew helps his clients navigate multigenerational planning, philanthropy, and legacy-building with care. 
 

A proud New Jersey native, Andrew graduated from Penn State University, where he met his wife, Elissa. Together, they live in northern New Jersey with their two children, Carli and Jed. 

Andrew is passionate about giving back and actively supports organizations that make a meaningful impact. He currently serves as Treasurer and board member of NephCure Kidney International and has held board role with The Daughters of Miriam Center for the Aged and past president of Preakness Hills Country Club.  
 
Andrew is honored to be recognized and is deeply grateful for the opportunity to support a cause so close to his heart.

Andy Cohen  

Emmy Award-winning Host and Executive Producer of Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live 

Andy Cohen is an Emmy Award-winning host, producer, and author best known as the host and executive producer of Emmy-Nominated “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,” Bravo’s late night, interactive talk show. The series is the only live show in late night television and consistently makes headlines with bold interviews viewers don’t see anywhere else. Cohen serves as executive producer on over 11 properties across NBCUniversal. He also has two personally curated channels onSiriusXM “Radio Andy” and “Andy Cohen’s Kiki Lounge,” and his own book imprint, Andy Cohen Books. He has been a New York Times best-selling author five times and hosts CNN’s NYE Special with Anderson Cooper.

In his ten years as an executive at Bravo he was responsible for an aggressive slate of unscripted series and specials including hits. Cohen received an Emmy award when season six of “Top Chef” won at the 2010 primetime Emmy Awards and has been nominated for 18 additional Emmy Awards. In 2019, Cohen was awarded the Vito Russo Award by GLAAD. In June 2020, Andy was recognized in The Hollywood Reporter and Variety’s Most Powerful LGBTQ Players in Hollywood lists. Additionally, Cohen received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in February 2022. Born in St. Louis, Cohen resides in New York City with his son, Benjamin Cohen and daughter, Lucy Cohen.

Medical Professional of the Year Award

Aliza Thompson, MD, MS

Director, Division of Cardiology and Nephrology Office of New Drugs, Center for Drug Evaluation & Research (CDER), Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

Aliza Thompson is Director of the Division of Cardiology and Nephrology, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Division of Cardiology and Nephrology regulates and reviews Investigational New Drug applications and marketing applications for drug and biologic products for the treatment of cardiovascular and kidney diseases.  

Dr. Thompson joined the FDA in 2007. Prior to her current position, Dr. Thompson served as Deputy Director of the Division. Dr. Thompson received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins Medical School and completed her Internal Medicine and Nephrology training at Columbia University/New York-Presbyterian Hospital. She holds a Master of Science in Biostatistics/Patient Oriented Research Track from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.
