Race Inclusion in Kidney Disease

Click to Watch…

For more than 20 years, eGFR was calculated differently for Black and non-Black people. Using these two different calculations has led to disparities in the way patients are able to access care and treatments for kidney disease.

In 2020, a task force was established to reassess the use of race in calculating eGFR. Dr. Crystal Gadegbeku, Chair of Nephrology at Cleveland Clinic, was part of this task force, and led a discussion on the history, the process, and the significance of removing race-based calculations in nephrology — she also explains how removing the racial bias from eGFR calculations can improve health outcomes for all kidney disease patients.
