William Smoyer, MD

Dr. Smoyer has focused his career on basic, clinical, and translational research to improve the understanding of the molecular regulation of podocyte injury during nephrotic syndrome, and to develop more effective and safer novel treatments for childhood nephrotic syndrome. He has been awarded numerous grants from the NIH, funding both basic research and clinical trials related to glomerular disease, nephrotic syndrome, and podocyte biology. He has also had extensive clinical research leadership experience, having co-led for the last several years a large 2,400 patient multi-center prospective clinical trial in adult and pediatric glomerular disease (CureGN), led the previous national CTSA Child Health Oversight Committee (CC-CHOC), and participated in the development of the Institute for Advanced Clinical Trials in Children (I ACT). He is a co-founder and member of the Board of Directors of the Pediatric Nephrology Research Consortium (PNRC; formerly the Midwest Pediatric Nephrology Consortium), a clinical research consortium that for the last 17 years has engaged >50% of all pediatric nephrology programs in North America (currently 95 sites) in multi- center retrospective and prospective clinical/translational studies to drive improvements in the care of children with kidney disease. He has authored >140 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, and is a member of the SPR, APS, ASPN, and IPNA, a Fellow of the ASN, among other associations.

He has also had a longstanding interest in the development of learning health systems. He developed and oversaw the creation, implementation, and evaluation of a pilot program (Learn From Every Patient®) containing key elements of a learning health system, which resulted in notable reductions in health care utilization and health care costs, as well as the systematic generation of research-quality data during routine clinical care to enable peer-reviewed publications that drive systematic improvements in clinical care.
