TARPEYO (Budesonide)

TARPEYO (budesonide) Delayed Release Capsules is a recently FDA approved treatment for IgA nephropathy.

How Does TARPEYO (Budesonide) Delayed Release Capsules Work?

TARPEYO (Budesonide) Delayed Release Capsules works to lower the amount of IgA in the body.  When too much IgA is in the kidneys, it leads to inflammation and damage to the kidney filters. TARPEYO (Budesonide) Delayed Release Capsules works to target the cells in the gut that make IgA.  By targeting these cells, the amount of IgA in the body (and kidneys) is reduced.

What Kind of Medication is TARPEYO (Budesonide) Delayed Release Capsules?

TARPEYO (Budesonide) Delayed Release Capsules is an oral treatment (taken by mouth). It is a corticosteroid, but unlike other steroids (like prednisone), TARPEYO (Budesonide) Delayed Release Capsules is considered a targeted therapy because it works specifically in the gut; it targets the cells that play an important role in IgA nephropathy (IgAN). TARPEYO (Budesonide) Delayed Release Capsules is also the only FDA-approved steroid for IgAN treatment.  Other steroids have systemic (whole body) impact, not targeted.

TARPEYO (Budesonide) Delayed Release Capsules is usually taken for 9-months and may be prescribed with other medications, such as blood pressure medication.  Be sure to discuss with your nephrologist the best treatment plan and options for you.

*Note: The decision to prescribe a medication is the responsibility of your physician/medical team based on their evaluation of your condition. The above is meant for informational purposes only. Discuss this information and all information about drugs/medications with your physician before starting or stopping any medication.
