Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS)<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

FSGS is a term that describes a pattern of scarring in the kidneys. This scarring can be seen on a biopsy in patients with increased levels of protein in their urine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who Gets FSGS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

FSGS occurs in all age groups and among people from all backgrounds. There are some notable risk factors. FSGS is more common among people with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– A family history of FSGS
– African ancestry
– Low birth weight
– Obesity
– Premature birth
– Viral infections, including HIV<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

Types of FSGS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are four types of FSGS as defined by the 2021 Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes Glomerular Diseases Work Group (KDIGO) guidelines<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Primary<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

the most aggressive form, caused by a defect in the immune system<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Secondary<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

from an identifiable cause such as a viral infection or drug<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

\n\n

Genetic<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

caused by a change in your genes<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Unknown cause<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Signs and Symptoms<\/h3>\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n

All forms of FSGS cause high levels of protein in the urine. This increased protein can cause the urine to appear frothy or foamy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other common signs of FSGS include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
