Aetna has indicated that they may restrict or eliminate coverage for the drug Acthar, a treatment for Nephrotic Syndrome. If Aetna succeeds in eliminating coverage for this drug, the decision could cause a ripple-effect that could impact negatively people suffering from other rare diseases. Other insurance companies could view Aetna’s decision as an invitation to stop covering treatments of other rare diseases.

NephCure to Consult with Researchers on Nephrotic Syndrome Study  

photoThe Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) awarded a contract to support the “Development of a Patient-Centered Decision Tool for Nephrotic Syndrome Management.” Debbie Gipson, M.S., M.D. (photo left), principal investigator and pediatric nephrologist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor will lead the two-year project  at the University of Michigan, University of North Carolina and Ryerson University in Toronto in conjunction with The NephCure Foundation.
