Dr. Reiser's research has provided mechanistic insights into the molecular pathogenesis of proteinuric kidney diseases. He discovered the circulating factor implicated in Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), an aggressive form of chronic kidney disease. Soluble urokinase receptor (suPAR) is pathologically overproduced in the plasma of FSGS patients allowing for binding of pathological suPAR on podocytes; thereby initiating structural changes that trigger proteinuric kidney disease.
