Dr. Marilyn Gist Farquhar is a Professor and Chair of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, as well as a Professor of Pathology at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Gist Farquhar has received several awards for excellence in her field. Among her awards are the Homer Smith Award of the American Society of Nephrology, the A. N. Richards Award of the International Society of Nephrology, and the Wilson Award of the American Society of Cell Biology. On April 4, 2006, she was honored by the Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology with the 2006 Excellence in Science Award. She has served on numerous editorial boards and currently serves as the Associate Editor of the Journal of Histchemistry and Cytochemistry.
Dr. Gist Farquhar received her A.B. degree in Zoology, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Experimental Pathology from the University of California Berkeley and San Francisco. She completed her Postdoctoral Fellowships at the University of Minnesota, the University of California San Francisco, and Rockefeller University. She has published nearly 300 papers in esteemed journals and has educated over 40 postdoctoral and graduate students.
Dr. Gist Farquhar’s current research focuses on defining the molecular mechanisms involved in the factors that lead to the development of glomerular diseases such as nephrotic syndrome. She is a ground breaker in the study of cell structure and function, and is recognized for her electron microscopy studies. Her research is supported by grants from the NIH (NIDDK and NCI).
