NephCure Brings Together Researchers and Pharma with RAM

On April 21-22, 2012, The NephCure Foundation hosted the Research Accelerator Meetings (RAM) in Miami Beach, FL.

This invitation only symposium that brought together physicians and scientists from academic medical centers and representatives from more than a half dozen  biopharmaceutical companies with an interest in drug development for kidney disease.

RAM is a new program initiated by NephCure to engage these two groups in an exchange of knowledge that will accelerate drug development leading to better treatments and a cure for primary FSGS and other diseases that cause Nephrotic Syndrome.

Young Investigators, many of whom had received grants from NephCure, presented data from their scientific investigations of the molecular and cellular biology of kidney cells as they seek to uncover the biological mysteries that underlie these diseases.

Other researchers presented their progress using whole animal models from mice to zebra fish to the fruit fly to understand how kidneys might fail in humans.

Each presenter was asked to consider what clinical/medical applications could possibly result from their laboratory investigations.

Members of the pharmaceutical industry presented information on the challenges associated with finding a compound that is effective in protecting kidneys and how long and expensive a process it can be to get a drug through
