Marilyn Gist Farquhar, Ph.D. Posthumous Emeritus Dr. Marilyn Gist Farquhar was a professor of Pathology and a distinguished professor of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of California, San Diego who passed away in November 2019. Dr. Farquhar received several awards for excellence in her field, such as the Homer Smith Award of the American Society of Nephrology, the A. N. Richards Award of the International Society of Nephrology, and the Wilson Award of the American Society of Cell Biology. She was honored by the Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology with the 2006 Excellence in Science Award. She served on numerous editorial boards, including as the Associate Editor of the Journal of Histochemistry and Cytochemistry. Dr. Farquhar received her A.B. degree in Zoology, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Experimental Pathology from the University of California, Berkeley and San Francisco. She completed her postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Minnesota, the University of California, San Francisco, and Rockefeller University. She published nearly 300 papers in esteemed journals and educated over 40 postdoctoral and graduate students. Dr. Farquhar’s research focused on defining the molecular mechanisms involved in factors that lead to the development of glomerular diseases such as nephrotic syndrome. She was a groundbreaker in the study of cell structure and function, and was recognized for her electron microscopy studies. Her research was supported by grants from the NIH.
