The 2nd Annual Colin Mackay Mad Scot Trail Ride

photoOn October 9, 23 riders participated in the 2nd Annual Colin Mackay Mad Scot Trail Ride, raising over $1,100 for The NephCure Foundation.

This annual off-road bike ride starts and finishes in Jim Thorpe, a small town nestled in the Pocono Mountains. While the ride is a 52-mile scenic route along the Lehigh River, participants can make the trail as long or short as they want. The goal is for riders to enjoy their relaxing or challenging ride as well as raise money and help NephCure fight kidney disease and save lives.

Jim Gilbert, Mike Reynolds, and Kevin Horio started the bike ride to honor and support their dear friend Colin MacKay in his battle against Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). Colin has had two kidney transplants that have unfortunately been unsuccessful, but he still strives to be the best husband, father, and friend he can be. His friends see him as a hero and a true inspiration and therefore, created an event that continues to help Colin as he rallies for NephCure.

The Colin MacKay Mad Scot Trail Ride is held in hopes to reach out to others who are also affected by the disease. In this way, bikers can ride as a way of honoring their loved ones in their fight.

"We created a trail ride because when you're off-road, if you stop pedaling, you slow down much more quickly than on a paved surface,” said Horio. “This is like the struggle those we ride for - they endure this disease every day, they can never let up, they have to keep on pushing. So as you do the ride and you have to keep on pedaling to make it to the finish, remember those that you ride for - it's well worth the effort!”
