Evans Inspires 9 Year Old To Share His Story

PhotoJMU All-American, Dawn Evans, has been an inspiration to those with FSGS and Nephrotic Syndrome since she was diagnosed in 2009.  The February 27th game against Hofstra was no different.  Families affected by these kidney diseases are often seen at JMU games watching Evans play and that day the Rosario family was there.

Nine year old Jake Rosario, who has been diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome, was brought to the game to find inspiration in Evans.  After the game Jake and his family had the opportunity to meet Dawn, which led to the events of the next week.

An article written about the game and Dawn Evans was sent to Jake's mother, Paula.  Eager to share the story Paula sent the article to her son's teachers and principal.  Gaining the attention of the teacher, Jake was asked if he would be interested in presenting the article and his experience to the class.

Jake agreed to give the presentation but Paula had her reservations.  "I started to think, maybe I should be there or maybe the school social worker should be in the classroom.  Jake was concerned about being teased."

The day of his presentation came and Paula got a call from the teacher.  She reported that even though he had broken down at one point, Jake had done great and seemed to be okay.

“I don’t know many people - adults included - who could have done this same thing,” said Paula. “I am so very proud of Jake. He wouldn't have been inspired to do so if it hadn't been for watching Dawn and meeting her.  Her strength helped my son find his own strength to stand up in front of his 9-year-old peers and speak his truth."

The day after the presentation Jake even wore his Team Dawn t-shirt to school.
