Cheri's Story

photoI was diagnosed with FSGS in 2009 at the age of 57.

To be honest, I did not know I had a problem until they told me.  I was symptom free but after many tests showing protein in my urine and testing with the urologist, I was sent to a nephrologist.  After more blood work and urine tests, trying to eliminate all causes, we finally agreed it was time for a biopsy.

I have been treated successfully with steroid therapy and a new diet. The diet has been challenging to say the least, as I am a big meat lover. The steroids have added new challenges, including diabetes and cataracts.  But I do know how lucky I am, since I was diagnosed at a later age.

I am trying my best to stay in remission by taking care of myself, eating healthier and remaining positive.  As I have been a nurse for a long time, I have the ability to easily understand much of what I am told by physicians but it did not fully prepare me to comprehend a disease with no known cause or treatment.

I am blessed with a great support network of family and friends. It is an ongoing adventure and I hope to remain in the adventure for a long time to come.  I am thankful there is a group like NephCure for their support and research.
