With over one million holiday lights decorating the park, the 3rd annual NephCure Tampa Bay walk was an electrical spectacle!  Over 100 walkers came out and raised more than $16,000! Families and friends enjoyed delicious food from Mo’ Ziki, Skyline Chili, hot chocolate and coffee (thank you Jim!), homemade brownies (thank you Deanna!), a holiday cookie decorating station (thank you Freda’s Café & Bakery), holiday arts and crafts, an amazing raffle and a fantastic DJ that had the entire park grooving! The walk brought out new patients, new families and new friends and with everyone meeting and mingling surrounded by the festive lights. Special thanks to Walk Chair Darla Warner, her husband David and their dedicated family and close friends for all their hard work and support in organizing the walk; Many thanks also to “Friends of Will” and the 1st annual Pig Jig for their support of the NephCure Tampa Bay Walk, Sharon and John Pollock, Cindya & Vic Ramirez, Joyce Fisk, Jason Bowen and to the entire Tampa Bay NephCure team for all your dedication and hard work on behalf of the walk. A cold front passed through Phoenix on December 3rd!  The unusual cold may have deterred some,  but not the 57 enthusiastic walkers that joined the cause to launch Phoenix’s  FIRST Nephcure walk. It was such a great day – face painting and bounce house for the kids, music by Klove, fun raffle and great food! The historical Indian Steele School Park was a terrific location and offered a great walk route! Many thanks to the Shinn, Simms and Modi families for their hard work in making their first walk a success raising over $6200 to find the cure! Everyone is already planning for and looking forward to their second!

The 2nd annual Ft. Myers NephCure Walk brought together over 100 walkers raising over $19,000 towards research into better treatments and a cure for Nephrotic Syndrome and FSGS!  It was a day of amazing community and family support! Ideal weather at a perfect location the walk once again was a tremendous success thanks to the Fox and Dosoretz Families and their ‘team’ of dedicated friends! Special thanks to Amy Fox for all her hard work in organizing the walk! Many thanks also to the Herron Family, Irina Gershin Stevens, DO and Dr. Sharon Perlman who drove all the way from the Tampa/St. Pete area to support the walk. Walk activities included face-painting, arts and crafts, holiday cookie decorating, DJ, 3 bouncy houses, Fire Truck from Station #73, delicious food buffet and an incredible raffle that had almost everyone leaving a winner!
  

Central New Jersey Skate-A-Thon

We had 127 people attend the Second Annual Central Jersey Skate-a-Thon on Sunday, December 4 at South Amboy Roller Magic. Four patient families were represented, from various locations over Central and Northern New Jersey. Dr. Lynne Weiss again helped to kick-off the walk with her encouraging words.  We had food and coffee donated from local merchants and some fantastic raffle items for the participants to win.  The days events brought in over $1400.00 for NephCure, with some of the monies raised by Logan Semegram in honor of his brother, Cole, for his Bar Mitzvah project.  Money raised to date for the 2011 Central Jersey Skate-A-Thon is $6700.00

New Orleans, LA Walk

Ninety walkers (with some driving in all the way from Alabama) participated in the FIRST annual New Orleans NephCure Walk for a Cure on a beautiful late November Saturday with temps in the mid to upper 70’s  at the New Orleans City Park. Music was provided by a DJ that kept the program rolling and the group energized.  For lunch we had Jambalaya, chicken by Wasabi, pasta salad and wonderful sweets from “Be Sweet Cupcakes”. Raffles and sweepstakes tickets were on hand and most participated in their sale. When it was time to walk, everyone enjoyed the beauty of walking under 400 year old live oaks that lined our path. Special thanks go to the Kris and the entire Heidingsfelder family who were the driving force in this first ever event with promises that it will be twice as big next year.  A warm welcome also goes to the Gutierrez, Heap, Sheridan and Furman teams.

More than 150 walkers gathered at Stude Park for the 1st Annual NephCure Walk Houston. In addition to the 2 mile walk, the event featured an arts and crafts area for the kids, face painting, free food and drinks and music from local DJ “The Other Brother” to get everyone moving. Many thanks to Kroger Grocery Stores for donating 25 cases of water to keep our walkers cool and hydrated. A special thank you to Blue Ocean Brokerage and Hydra Syntec for supporting the event through corporate sponsorships. Through the hard work and dedication of the planning committee and the registered participants, approximately $11,500 was raised to support The NephCure Foundation. What a wonderful success for Houston’s first walk!

Rain was is in the forecast, but the clouds parted for an absolutely beautiful day on the beach at the Annenberg Beach House. Over 100 of us gathered to start the Nephcure LA Walk along the beach strand. Thanks to the McDonough Family, everyone enjoyed a delicious catered brunch. Following brunch, an informative presentation by three dedicated Nephrologist, Dr. Kamil (Cedars Sinai), Dr. Ora Yadin (UCLA) and Dr. Kevin Lemley (Childrens Hospital,Los Angeles) was sincerely appreciated by all. Thank you to all the participants, donors, volunteers and staff for making the day a wonderful experience for  everyone working to save kidneys and save lives.  More than $30,000 was raised by many committed patients, families and friends.

Over fifty walkers gathered in sunny, cool Florida at Blue Jacket Park in Orlando for our third annual NephCure Walk which raised over $5,500.00 for NephCure. One family drove from the Miami area (over 200 miles) and their friends flew up that morning for the walk! For the kids there was a bouncy house, face painting, origami and a NephCure ornament craft station; for everyone there was a gourmet coffee bar, bottled waters, delicious pastries, bagels and morning breads, raffle prizes, goody bags and a DJ that had everyone grooving for NephCure!  Special thanks to the local planning team: Ericka Washington and her family, Heather Graham and her family and Tara Cooper and her family and Dr. Robert Mathias for his enduring support!

 It never rains in California!,,,But on November 6, 2011 Mother Nature decided it was time to end our drought with a torrential and cold downpour in Orange County that would not let up! Eighty walkers participated in the third annual Baton Rouge NephCure Walk for a Cure on a sunny warm day on the LSU campus. Live music provided my LA Nites. Jambalaya was prepared on site for lunch by Kevin Landry. For the kids we had 2 bounce houses and face painting. Raffles, pastries and coffee were in plentiful supply for early arrivals and those with a sweet tooth. Special thanks go to the Roy and Landry families for their leadership of the event. A warm welcome also to our three new patient families who drove in from Gonzales, Lafayette and all the way from near the Arkansas border to be with us.

Oklahoma City’s first NephCure Walk was held on October 29, 2011 at the Stars and Stripes Park, an absolutely beautiful location. On a brisk, sunny and windy day, 40 walkers enjoyed meeting each other and walking the varied route. All had fun taking pictures at the circle point facing the lake! Food, raffle and Halloween candy marked the day! All are committed to their goal of awareness outreach and raised over $2000 to help find a cure for FSGS and NS. Thanks to Dr. Henry for joining us and to all who participated. Everyone was glad to have OKC on the Nephcure map and are already looking forward to next year!

On Saturday, six NephCure families were represented from all over Indiana at the 2nd Annual Indianapolis Walk. Two families drove over 3 hours away-a thank you shout out to the Wills and the Chamorro's! Over 50 walkers came out to share their stories at beautiful Garfield Park on a brisk morning. Good thing our Zumba warm-up instructor, Alicia Strong kept us moving! Once again we received a great community response to their collective efforts, raising over $5,000. Team Sophie's mom sold t-shirts and bracelets as a fundraiser and her bank colleagues wore them all month to raise awareness. Yesenia Chamorro also sold t-shirts to her co-workers, and over 200 colleagues made donations and wore them, joining Team Chamorro at the Chicago walk. They enjoyed themselves so much, they came to the Indy Walk, also!

Over ninety family members and friends gathered at Liberty Station Park in San Diego for our second annual Nephcure Walk.  It was a cool Sunday morning and what was even more cool was a big surprise from the San Diego fire department showing up with a special guest....Chuck E Cheese!  Chuck E and his fireman friends had goody bags for all!  A big thanks to Chuck E, the firemen and to all for your participation!

Although it was a bit chilly, we were met with a sunny day at Nazareth Park for the first annual Lehigh Valley NephCure Walk on October 22.  Over 50 people attended to support Aiden as well as the Baucom's, another local family, whose son also has Nephrotic Syndrome.  Local merchants donated their services, including a DJ and facepainter, as well as food and raffle items.  The Upper Nazareth Fire Department sent over two fire trucks while also donating $100.00. The walk was a true testament to the support and dedication of a small town towards one of their own.  Over $2000.00 was raised in support of NephCure and Aiden.  The Conover's were thrilled with the outcome and even more pleased by the  commitment from their friends, family and community.

 Another beautiful Sunday for the Chesterbrook NephCure Walk at Wilson Farm Park.  We had about 100 people attend, with 7 patients being represented.  Congressman Gerlach again helped to kick-off the walk with his encouraging words.  Our DJ, Jason Hart Klein, has been donating his time and services for multiple years and really got the crowd excited.  We had food donated, as well, from local merchants and some fantastic raffle items for the participants to win.The Chesterbrook NephCure Walk draws patients from surrounding Philadelphia suburbs.

On a crisp fall day, the first ever Toronto Walk (third walk location in Canada!) drew over 50 people to High Park and raised over $10,000 for NephCure.  Unable to travel, Team Toronto co-chair Andrea Galbraith and her team walked simultaneously in Calgary, Canada, for a joint effort raising awareness across the country.  Special thanks to the nephrology nurses and dietician staff from Sick Kids in Toronto for their support and amazing fundraising!

Michigan’s First Annual NephCure Walk was a big success.  Over 100 walkers joined several nephrologists from the University of Michigan Hospital to raise nearly $15,000!  The rain held off at Hines Park in Dearborn Heights long enough for everyone to walk the 2 mile route, enjoy breakfast, meet new friends and win some truly amazing raffle prizes.

Denver’s Second Annual NephCure Walk was held  at the Highland Heritage Regional Park. The weather was perfect and the turnout outstanding. We routed a 1.5 mile walk through the park. Post Walk activities included face-painting, crafts table, low sodium recipe contest, kidney bean toss, music and more! Raffle was a success with many going home winners. WIth final numbers still coming in, the 2011 Long Island Walk raised almost $80,000 with over 300 attendees, including Mayor Wayne Hall of Hempstead, NY.  The Mayor, who recently acknowledged a struggle with FSGS that began in 1973, addressed the crowd before kicking off the walk.  Special thanks to the more than 20 patients and their families who helped organize.

The first annual walk in Idaho was held at the Community Park in Idaho Falls with an attendance of 72 walkers.  It was a beautiful day filled with music, fun and a raffle. Honorary co- chairs Dr. Fahim Rahim and Dr. Michael Haderlie, from the Idaho Kidney Institute spoke, followed by an enthusiastic walk and raffle. Approximately $4500.00 was raised.  Special thanks to the Garner family.

Participants in the second annual Baltimore Walk met at Sliders Grill for a festive kick-off party, joined by Honorary Chair Dr. Susan Mendley from U of MD and Moonface author Angela Balcita.  After a proclamation from the Mayor's office that named the date "NephCure Day" in Baltimore, the teams enjoyed a day at the ballpark watching the Orioles.  This walk raised over $3,500.
